About Me

Some information about myself.

Working in the newsroom since 2011.

Anna Gallegos

Journalist

Hello, I’m a journalist and digital media graduate student in Austin, Texas.

I am currently looking for a job as a journalist or digital producer in a newsroom as I finish the last year on my digital media masters degree from Texas State University in San Marcos. I come from a traditional print journalism background having been a reporter and copy editor at a number of major daily newspapers, but my goal is to become a digital or social editor for a news organization.

My Skills

These are the skills that I excel at or that I am learning.

Work Experience

  1. Designer / Copy Editor

    Gatehouse Media
Click to edit position descriptionWhen I first began this job I designed pages for the community team, which focused on small-circulation daily papers published in the Midwest and the east coast. Midway through my time at Gatehouse, I was moved to proofreading for the features team, which designs the arts and entertainment sections for Gatehouse's larger daily newspapers (ex: Las Vegas Review-Journal, Daytona (Fla.) News Journal and the Providence (R.I.) Journal).
  2. Hockey Blogger

    Sports Illustrated
I was a remote hockey contributor to Sports Illustrated for the 2014-2015 NHL season. My work focused on writing nightly blog posts highlighting games, player injuries and transactions while contributing my own analysis of the game. I worked with editors to identify possible post topics and multimedia elements to add to my storytelling.

This position allowed me to use my Twitter account to promote my articles and establish myself as a trusted resource in the online hockey community.

Also, Richard Deitsch invited me to guest write for his sports media column about sexism in hockey and hockey reporting.

  3. Legal Reporter

    LXBN / LexBlog
I was the sole print reporter on staff. On a daily basis, I wrote blog posts about federal and Supreme Court decisions, and round-ups of what LexBlog bloggers wrote on other legal topics. I also wrote feature pieces giving an in-depth legal perspective on mainstream news topics - e.g. the denial of due process to immigrant children; LGBT acceptance in the workplace; the risks for Tesla after switching to open source patents.

Along with the editorial manager, I helped create the social media content strategy for LXBN.com. During my time with LexBlog, I instituted using Google analytics and Twitter Cards to measure and shape daily tweets. I measured social media growth and engagement on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis to identify what times were best to send out new Tweets, what were the most popular links and what types messages drove the most engagement (questions, photos, retweets, etc). Under my management, the @LXBN Twitter following grew by 20% and traffic to LXBN.com rose by 40%.

  4. Communications Intern

    GMMB
Click to edit position descriptionI created digital content and social media outreach strategies for @TedxChange, @Linked_Learning, @WA_Charters and @SightandLife on Twitter; and for Sight and Life, Linked Learning Alliance and Washington HealthPlanFinder on Facebook.

I also copy edited various publications and internal memos on behalf of the agency's leadership.

  5. Social Media Associate

    Consumer Media Network
I managed the Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts for three online education and personal finance blogs. In this position, I worked to promote CMN’s blog content by building relationships with similar websites and engaging our audience through Twitter chats, sharing links and answering questions related to financial management.

My duties also included tracking social shares, blog metrics and trends to help the editors better gear their content. I also assisted in moderating comments on CMN’s sites.

  6. Hockey Reporter

    The Overtime Page
I covered the Houston Aeros for the 2011 – 2012 and 2012 – 2013 seasons before the team relocated to Des Moines, Iowa. Asides from providing post game articles, I live tweeted games and cultivated my own Twitter following to promote my content.

Not only did I interview Minnesota Wild rookies like Charlie Coyle and Jason Zucker for feature articles and videos, but I started my own web series (“On the Other Side of the Ice”) that allowed me to interview top AHL players not on the Aeros. The highlight of the series was interviewing Joe Morrow after he was traded to the Dallas Stars/Texas Stars, which was his first interview with the team.

I also assisted with copy editing and uploading content to theovertimepage.com.

Theovertimepage.com is a sports website founded by University of Houston journalism students in 2009 who wanted the opportunity to cover Houston’s professional sports teams.

  7. General Assignments Reporter

    The Oakland Tribune
As a general assignments reporter, I had a chance to report on crime, the Asian immigrant population and various community improvement programs. I assisted staff reporters on covering the Occupy Movement and Obama’s 2012 trip to Oakland.

The highlight of my time with the Tribune was covering the high-profile Hans Reiser civil trial. My articles were serialized on the San Jose Mercury News website.

I held this position through the Chips Quinn Scholars Program.

  8. Metro Reporter, Web Producer, Copy Editor

    The Houston Chronicle
This was an internship facilitated through the Jack J. Valenti School of Communication at the University of Houston. I spent my first semester there on the city desk where I mostly reported and wrote the area crime briefs and weekend features.

During the spring semester, I moved to the Chronicle’s web production team and the copy desk. I compiled SEO content for the Newswatch and Hot Topics blogs during peak web traffic hours. On the copy desk, I wrote headlines and cutlines for the metro and national sections of the daily paper.

  9. Copy Editor

    Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I worked on the universal copy desk writing headlines and cutlines for the metro, national, business and lifestyles section. I assisted in laying out pages for the weekend lifestyles section.
